What the heck is nacre?
Stay with me, please, this is going to get technical. Nacre (NAY-ker) is the pearly substance secreted by the outer epithelium of the mollusk’s mantle. The mantle is an organ that lines the shell of a bivalve (two-shelled) mollusk. BTW, not all mollusks have two shells, some have only one, and some have none at all – but I digress. Chemically, nacre is calcium carbonate in the form of aragonite platelets that are held together by an organic “glue” called conchiolin (kon-KY-uh-lin). Under extreme magnification with an electron microscope, the aragonite platelets are arranged in a brick-like pattern. I hope your eyes haven’t glazed over with this scientific explanation so I’ll try to make it up to you with this, the good bits. A pearl is made up of layers of nacre. And when nacre is deposited on the inside of the mollusk’s shell, the iridescent coating is called mother-of-pearl.
Interesting fact: of approximately 8000 bivalve mollusk species, fewer than 20 are capable of creating a pearl.

I’ve often heard the expression “good jewellery”, and it’s almost always used in this context, “Oh, this isn’t good jewellery; it’s just cheap.” To me, good jewellery is any jewellery, regardless of price, that makes you feel good when you wear it. Now, I realize this is won’t fly with everyone because many people believe that good jewellery must be made of precious metal; must be set with precious gems; and must have an appropriately precious price tag. However, my idea of good jewellery is all about sentimentality and how your jewellery makes you feel. So wear your good jewellery, wear it often, and wear it with pride.

All thread stretches over time. If your beloved pearl necklace requires re-stringing, we are pleased to offer Re-stringing services featuring hand-knotting by a GIA-trained expert. But we do more than pearls! Have you acquired some amazing beads, and would like to have them hand-knotted into necklaces or bracelets? We will string your gemstones or vintage beads as you wish into a Custom Design.
